The History of the Glas Industry in Šumava-Region (19th / 20th century), the Analysis of Post-War Development and the Actual Phase

The topic of mine submitted dissertation is the historical and present form of glass industry at the Bohemian Forest. I focused on the development of the glassmaking process during the 19th and 20th century and its present conditions The thesis is split into several parts. The introduction is focusing on the glassmaking process and history at the Bohemian Forest till the 20th century and I emphasized the conditions of the glass industry during the 19th century in that part. The following part observes and analyse the conditions of glass-factories in the 20th century and the study of particular periods is as well elaborated in this section. In the third part I paid attention to the contemporary Bohemian Forest glassmakers who are still operating there. The last chapter is focusing on the future development of glassmaking at the Bohemian Forest. After that follows the dictionary of special notions which should provide a better orientation in the text itself and at the terminology which I used throughout my dissertation. It is followed by a list of German local names and their Czech equivalents. Finally, the entire work is enclosed by the attached illustration.

The Art Nouveau Ecclesiastical Architecture in Czech Republic (Bohemia)

The Art Nouveau ecclesiastical architecture in Czech Republic (Bohemia) The diploma thesis focusses on Art Nouveau religious architecture in Bohemia. It deals with the cultural and art movements between 1890-1920 which íncludes the late Historicism, Art Nouveau, and Modernism. The first part of the diploma thesis presents the influences which affected the development of Art Nouveau religious architecture in Bohemia and its architects. It also introduces architectural elements that are typical for Art Nouveau religious architecture. The second part of the diploma thesis presents religious buildings in the particular regions of Bohemia and describes them subsequently in the catalogue that is arranged chronologically. Imaginations of "Otherness" and Freak Show Culture in the 19th- and 20th-Century Prague

in English Dissertation deals with the freak show culture in Prague and the Czech lands in a broader context of the modern discourses of dis/ability and the imaginations of the collective body of the Czech nation. Exhibitions of "Lilliputians", "Giants", "Siamese twins" and other "extraordinary" bodies are analyzed here as a part of the history of an international entertainment culture in the 19th-century Europe. The emphasis lays on the turn of the century, the decade that witnessed rash development both of the capitalist entertainment industry and the expert disciplines that dealt with the "ab/normal". I claim, that the popularity of freak shows in this period rested in their ability to articulate fears and ambitions of their visitors, both in their individual embodied experience and their imaginative belonging, notably their belonging to the collective body of the Czech nation. In four case studies, I focus on individual freak figures and analyze how the intersections of different axes of difference - ethnicity, gender, class - within the representation of "the extraordinary", coproduced certain notion of social order and power hierarchies that were closely intertwined with the imagined collective body of nation.

The villa architecture in Prague at the turn of the 19th and 20th century as a new phenomenon of living in the Central European context.

This Bachelor thesis deals with family villas in Prague from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, taking into account the European context. By that time a new relationship to modern architecture began to form. The thesis takes into consideration the displays of Art Nouveau and Modernism and the usage of folk features in the architecture of family villas. The first part of the thesis deals with the compilation of literary sources, which represents the theoretical basis of the following chapters. The second part is dedicated to the first family villas, which were built on the territory of today's Prague. The thesis clearly discusses the architectural work of four architects, some of whom were also builders. At the turn of the millenium, these architects had their family houses built or designed with the above-mentioned new features incorporated. The thesis focuses especially on the family villas of Jan Kotěra, Jan Koula, Karel Vítězslav Mašek and Dušan Samuel Jurkovič. The aim of this thesis is to create an idea of the importance of family houses at the beginning of the modern architecture and to show what sources of inspiration the architects used and who the typical builders were.

Czechs and Germans in Prague: a competition of associational life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries

The work is devoted to Czech-German coexistence in Prague, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1848, the Czechs found themselves in the involuntary role of supporters of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, within which the Czech-speaking population had to live alongside the Germans, who also belonged to the territory. The coexistence of the two nations was unproblematic, rather variable, which was also reflected in the political and social spheres of life. The Czech-German coexistence was important for the development of the associational life. The creation and subsequent competition of these associations are the focus of this thesis. Three Czech institutions which were important for the contemporary cultural and social life and which had an analogous German pair were selected: The National Theatre and the New German Theatre, the Arco Cafe and the Union, and the Deutsches Casino together with the Měšťanská beseda. Their friendly and hostile tendencies and competition between them were examined.

Sacral buildings in urbanism of the municipalities of Prague in 19th and 20th century

The diploma thesis deals with sacral architecture in the urban structure of the Prague districts of the 19th and 20th centuries. The aim is to answer the question whether these two centuries prolong the tradition in which the urban structure responded to sanctuaries, which were often the basic starting point for new urban foundations or, on the contrary, only respond to the given urban situation. The main ambition of the work is to create a set of material from Prague urbanism to illustrate the development of relationship between sacral structures and urban space during the 19th and 20th centuries. Based on available sources, documents, catalogs, and maps, the work tries to compare new church builders with a catholic tradition without excluding the issue of minor christian churches and synagogues from the scope of the work. Architecture of Prague's Financional Institutions in the European Context

The diploma thesis deals with architecture of financial institutions in Prague - banks, savings banks and insurance companies - from the middle of the 19th century (when the first representative headquarters of financial institution in Prague was built) to 1939. The research of the thesis is focused on territory of Prague New Town, which is included in town area of Prague 1, where the highest concentration of these financial buildings was in whole research period. The diploma thesis will register and interpret individual headquarters of financial institution in Prague in historical, economic and political context within the Czech lands and the Habsburg monarchy, then also within the Czechoslovak Republic; and in the context of urban and wider architectural development in Prague and Europe too.
